Times: 6.30pm to 8.30pm
and takes place at:
Kingsthorpe Children’s Centre
St David’s Road

YOUNG PEOPLE WILL...

* Understand what makes a good and bad babysitter.

* Understand the roles and responsibilities of babysitters and parents.

* Feel confident that they can recognise hazards and deal with them in an appropriate way.

* Understand why a child might cry and respond accordingly.

* Develop first aid skills for both life threatening and minor injuries.

* Have an opportunity to practise their responses to sensitive situations.

* Understand different activities through play and toys appropriate to different age groups.

The babysitting course is an accredited course providing babysitting guidance. All those that participate and complete the programme will receive a certificate which can be used for your CV or job application.

All of the sessions on the babysitting course are interactive, involving young people directly in their learning both through information sharing, groups discussion and practical activities.

The babysitting programme also explores a number of related issues. The young people will learn about expectations as a babysitter, the law with babysitting, accident prevention, fire safety, first aid and dealing with challenging babysitting situations.

After completing the course the young people will have a better understanding of how to maintain the safety and wellbeing of children in their care and appreciate that being a babysitter is a responsible and trusted position.

New Adventure Play Area For Kingsthorpe Rec
Northampton Borough Council is pleased to announce that an exciting new adventure play area will be created on Kingsthorpe Recreation Ground in early 2010. The Council now wants local people to help design it.

Plans for the new play area became a reality after £49,000 of funding was awarded to Northampton Borough Council and Kingsthorpe Neighbourhood Management by Northamptonshire County Council as part of the Playbuilders fund. County Councillors representing the wards of Kingsthorpe, Boughton Green and St David’s have also boosted the fund by contributing money from their community empowering budgets.

Pupils from primary and secondary schools in Kingsthorpe came up with original ideas for the play area earlier this year. These ideas; which include rope bridges, tall climbing nets and a tunnel slide, then helped to form the basis of the proposal, which will now be developed into a number of final designs. The Borough Council will be asking the local community to comment on the designs and to choose the final one for the new play area.

Designs will be on display at the Kingsthorpe Recreation Ground Bookings Office (next to the tennis courts) from 24th to 29th August between 10am and 12pm. The display will take place alongside the Multi-Sports activities provided on the recreation ground by Northampton Borough Council Sports Development Team. There will be further opportunities to view and comment on the designs throughout September and October. Details of dates, times and venues will be available soon on the Kingsthorpe Neighbourhood Management Website

Councillor Sally Beardsworth, the Borough and County Councillor for Kingsthorpe said: “Some of the existing play equipment on the Rec is well over 20 years old and quite limited in terms of what play value it can offer to older children. So we are extremely pleased that we have been given this money to create a really different and exciting new play facility. We now want local children and young people to help us design it so they can have something they will enjoy for years to come.”

The play area should be open to the public by April 2010, when there will be a community launch event. If you would like any further information on the play area or the consultation activities, please contact Sara Kennedy at Northampton Borough Council 01604 837073 or email skennedy@northampton.gov.uk
